Fabulously Fit Friday

September 14, 2012 by Melissa

So I’ve been trying to sort out my fitness lately. Sometimes I just get in a state of mind where I want to change everything I’ve been doing, but I don’t know exactly what I want. From there, I usually head to the gym and do an all-out workout that feels different from the norm. It’s a great change of pace and I’m sure it will morph into a new routine that I will love for awhile.
I’m officially “in training” too! Whoot! My next race is November 4th  . I know that I started training late due to all of my weekend traveling, so I will decide as the race gets closer the safest way to finish it (sometimes, you just have to plan to walk it out, no shame!). Side note, if anyone else is planning on running the Chicago Hot Chocolate 15K, please let me know and we’ll meet up and cheer each other on!!
Weekend traveling always knocks me off of my fitness routine, so I plan during the week to stay disciplined so I can feel free during the weekends to just go with the flow. Luckily, when I visit my parents, my mom is always ready to take an evening walk with me. And now, when visiting my future father-in-law, I know that there is an elliptical at my disposal to stay on top of things .
I’ll be sharing a lot more of my fitness and healthy finds and tips as I’m in training and as the holidays creep up on us (the goal is to stay “wedding ready” up until that special day! For the rest of you, the goal is to stay “swim suit ready.”)
Here’s what happened/will happen this week:

Monday: 90 min. Bikram Yoga – I tried Bikram Yoga for the first time on Monday. If you follow me on Twitter, I was tweeting my trepidation, because I was both scared and excited to try it! I’ve always heard how intense hot yoga can be, so I’ve always had it in my list of things to try. Well, after 90 min of slipping and sliding around, I really felt refreshed and renewed. I paid for a one month trial, so I’ll be going back to get my money’s worth, then I’ll decide if I’m hooked enough to keep it up after that.
Tuesday: Rest
Wednesday: 3 mile power walk, pushing my nanny twins in the stroller. If you’ve ever tried to push a stroller with kids in it, you know how much of a work out it can be! I dashed through 3 miles, even picking up the pace to a jog for some of it!

Thursday: weights. I started with arms and did sets until my arms were tired. Then to rest my arms, I did some rounds of legs and abs, and then back to arms to finish them off. I ended with some cool down stretches and a plank combined with twisting plank. Bam!

Friday: Today’s plan is to get in 60 min of cardio (steady speed walking or cycling). I know that I have a pile of laundry waiting at home (and a fiancé that happens to love doing laundry…), and that we have a bowling date night planned (cute, right?), so I’m going to keep focused to get in my evening gym time.
Saturday: 90 min. Bikram Yoga (again!). Yep, I have plans to sweat it out again! I’m going with a friend, so the motivation is doubled.
Some healthy tid-bitsI tried this week*:
I love trying new healthy products. I feel like I get a new bounce in my step when I’m taking in healthy things.
Trace Minerals:After yoga, the teacher (she’s hilariously intense, by the way) reminded us as we walked out the door to replenish our trace minerals. I may be late to the game on this, but I’ve never been told that before! So I went to Whole Foods and bought a bottle of Trace Mineral drops. You put them in a large bottle of water and drink up (flavor-free)! Easy as pie and oh-so-healthy.

Kombucha: I know that this has been a new buzz, and I’ve been eyeing it in Whole Foods. Well, I hated it. Ugh, how disappointing. I love to love new healthy things, especially if they’re supposed to give you energy and clear skin, but I just couldn’t stomach this. I tried a few sips, a few gulps, plugging my nose…wait…shouldn’t I like a drink without having to plug my nose and hold my breath so I don’t gag? I thought my love of pickles and vinegar-only dressed salads would work to my advantage, but the fermented beverage just wasn’t for me. I feel so left out now 🙁

Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Bars:You all know my obsession with Greek yogurt. Like oatmeal, I eat several bowls of it per day and it is probably my primary protein source. These bars are basically made from granola, nuts, dried fruit, and Greek yogurt. They’re really good too! They aren’t overly sweet, taste predominately of toasted oats (always a good sign), and are about 160 calories with 7 grams of protein (a pretty good snack!).

If you follow me on Instagram (treats_with_a_twist), you’ll see that I love posting pictures of all of the healthy new products I try and of all of the fun and healthy meals/snacks I make! It’s practically my secondary food blog!
*I purchased all of these products with my own money and all of the opinions are my own.

Strike up a conversation: Have you tried any of these products? Do you have any awesome fitness products I should take a look at too? Just let me know!

I envy your energy. I hear ya about pushing the stroller though–I’m a nanny to a 2 yr. old and I walk a gravel jogging trail with him–the stroller alone weighs a least 10 lbs. and the boy weighs 31. After 3 miles I’m a sweaty mess and too tired to do much else!! Found you on the blog hop and am now your newest GFC follower. Would love it if you could visit my humorous blog site and follow back at http://Menopausalmother.blogspot.com I would be very grateful if you could. Thanks!!!

Thanks! It looks like energy when it’s written out but I’m pretty exhausted all the time 🙂 guess the energy gets used well!

My husband wants to try the Kombucha. I think I’ll tell him about your post after, just to see if he likes it or not. 🙂

I haven’t tried Yoga but always consider it.

    Happy weekend.

Oh dear, well now I feel like I’ll have to give one of those a try and judge from that. I literally took a few honest tries of that bottle and then gave the rest to a friend of mine!
