Sprinkles of Real Life

January 10, 2014 by Melissa

I’ve been wanting to write some more non-food posts, so I figured I’d start now. I’ll consider it adding a Sprinkle of Real Life into your diet. I won’t normally publish them on Friday, because that’s my Fabulously Fit day, but today I’ll make an exception.

  RealLife1

Recently my husband and I bought a new small SUV. Or as I call it, the Treatsmobile. It came with a 3 month subscription tease to Sirius Satellite Radio. And, of course, now I’m positive I can’t live without it. I love listening to Coffee House (basically acoustic, unplugged, live versions of songs), which reminds me of Acoustic Sunrise, which I used to listen to on Sunday mornings as I’d drive from Chicago to Northwest Arkansas, on my way home from visiting my parents. There’s just something about James Taylor and Paul Simon in acoustic raw versions that makes me feel like a totally different person. I turn into that positively moody and aloof version of myself (i.e. an extreme yet way cooler version of me) and just can’t help it! Makes me whip out the red lipstick and fingerless knit gloves. Don’t cancel my subscription!

I’ve decided that part of being a new, better version of myself in 2014 means that I need to read more books. Fun books. I tend to gravitate towards easy, really girly novels, so please don’t judge me and scoff at my choices because they have no deeper meaning. But as I read them, I’ll let you know what I’m reading and what I think of it. This week, I read “Where We Belong” by Emily Giffin. I’ve read all of her books and love how easy and enjoyable they are! Let’s me have a girly moment and have a mental break from all of the nutrition and exercise books I normally read.

What should I read next?? Tell me tell me!

  emilygiffin

Know what’s terrifying? Being home alone, taking a shower, and hearing your dog go absolutely psychotic, barking in the hallway. Um, stranger danger??

Every year I “resolve” to be more positive (if you couldn’t tell, I’m laced with sarcasm, negativity, and worry about everything). I’ve noticed that there’s a surge of super positive songs on the radio lately.  Pharrel’s “Happy” and Barenaked Ladies’ “Odds Are” are so candy sweet, I swear if I listened to them for an entire day I’d turn into a bubbly Kindergarten teacher. Though, maybe that’s exactly what I need. Pushing play.

Coveting a pair of Tieks and a pair of Tory Burch flats. Pleeeeeassseeee!!!

I have a 90 minute massage scheduled for Saturday morning. I can’t wait to melt into that table. I had a friend recently tell me that 2014 is going to be my year! Wow, that’s super nice! So, I’m taking that as I’m going to totally win in 2014. To make that happen, I’m going to be the best version of me. I’m going to do more yoga, melt into that massage table more often, get haircuts, and make appointments I’ve been putting off (anybody know a good dentist in Memphis?). 2014, here I come!

This year, there will be even more balance. There will be even more healthy treats (a lot of gluten-free, vegan, low sugar, and healthier versions of your favorite treats), but there will also be some more “fun” treats that may have just a bit more butter and sugar than there would have been in the past. Don’t be scared, just embrace it. Life is about balance, and enjoying the good stuff. There will also be more Real Life (like today’s post). We can talk about anything, from beauty products and craft projects to music and books. You’ll be getting a better peek at the woman behind the Treats (psst, that’s me!).

Any products or links used are not sponsored. This is just me, rambling. Love ya!

Treats from the week:

My favorite (and super simple) stovetop Small-Batch Cashew Goji Berry Granola.
And my healthy, baked, gluten-free Carrot Cake Donuts.

Positivity and balance. Those are my two resolutions this year, too!

Have you read “Gone Girl”? It’s fantastic–a real page turner. And I love Emily Giffin–have you read her “Something Borrowed” series? An author similar to Emily Giffin is Jennifer Weiner. I love her book “Good in Bed”.

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll be looking those up! I’ve heard of Gone Girl bc I heard it was SO weird but a must read! And I have read a Jennifer Weiner book so I’ll look that one up next (I have all of Emily Giffin’s books so I already love that series). Thanks!

I just read “Heartburn” by Nora Ephron and it is hilarious! It’s a really old chick-lit book and a super fast read (under 200 pages) but I enjoyed it so much, def worth picking up for a fun laugh!

Sprinklessssss! Oh girl, I LOVE it! So much so that I’m typing up this comment on my tiny phone keyboard (you know how much I hate that) while at the gym. Hey, it’s cardio AND conversation! 😉 Your words on balance are so inspiring and I think you should know that I was giving you a mental fist pump in the air after every one of your plans for the new year! I’m with you all the way…and especially on the books! I had no idea you liked reading Emily Giffin! I love her! I read Something Borrowed LONG before Kate Hudson made a mockery out of it! 😉 I haven’t heard of this one but I have Baby Proof on my bookshelf right now waiting it’s turn. I just started a Nora Roberts book last night that my mom lent me. It’s one of three in a series (and apparently one of almost two hundred that she’s written)…it’s new to me, but she’s one of my mom’s favorite authors and I think she has pretty good taste in literature so we’ll see!

I can’t believe the dealership teased you with a 3 month membership to Sirius! I think mine was at least 6 months! Trust me though, if you’re not a random flicker of the radio channels, it starts to get really repetitive after a while…I know, sad face! But I have a solution! If you don’t already, get a audio cord for your phone, plug it in, and crank up the Pandora! 🙂 Then do me a favor and get the red lipstick out for me…I just can’t pull it off…at least not without flashbacks to scary clowns! 😉

Ok, that’s enough of a novel for now. I’m actually pretty proud of myself…I haven’t tripped on the treadmill ONCE! Lol

I will wear the red lipstick more often just for YOU!
And I have all of Giffin’s books, so you should definitely read them. So girlie good!
