You Think You’re A Foodie…

January 13, 2012 by Melissa

I don’t know about you, but I definitely consider myself a foodie. I think I’m adventurous in my eating and very knowledgable about all varieties of food (I’ve often found myself the target of food trivia questions). That said, have you seen this list of 100 foods you should eat before you die? I was excited when I heard about it, because they say that the average person has had 20 of them, and I was sure that I would blow the “average person” out of the water. Wow, was I mistaken and embarrassed! I scored 40 and the ones I have had are marked with an asterisk (*). What’s your number? (Steve will be proud to tell you he scored 63). I am quickly trying to figure out which foods will be the easiest for me to try and increase my number. I must say, though, that there are a ton of exotic and unique foods out there that I have tried that are not on the list, which was pretty disappointing.

Wow, there were several things that AREN’T worth trying on the list, that’s for sure! Umeboshi are super salty plums marinated in the saltiest thing you can imagine. One little plum as over 1k mg of sodium. Yikes!
Pho is good, and I think there’s a shop you can get it at in Fayetteville now. Nettle tea is good, but not amazing. It IS super high in iron though 🙂 Octopus is really delicious, but only order it someplace that specializes in seafood or else you could get some that’s so overcooked and chewy you’ll never try it again. Head cheese is NOT worth it. Check out Meridienne in Rogers on a Friday or Saturday morning before 10 for eggs benedict. They do a little variation with a croissant, but the holandaise is the best you’ll find in the area. And seriously, if you haven’t had an heirloom tomato yet, you haven’t lived! Okay, that may be a stretch, but they ARE delicious! They are the lumpy ones at the farmers markets (true some of them aren’t lumpy, but that’s a sure bet if they are). Enjoy!! 🙂 I’ve had 64 of them.

Tracy, that’s amazing! I’m so sad that I just moved away from NWA bc I’ve been dying to try eggs benedict! But when I visit, I’ll definitely know where to find them. And I have food dreams about the farmers market and beautiful tomato salads, so that is definitely on the top of my list!
I’ll be happy to say I have now had Bagel and lox and Moon Pie because I am trying anything I see that is on the list!

I'm Melissa! This is a space for gluten-free treats and eats, a more natural lifestyle, health and beauty, family travel and sustainability. I hope you stay awhile and enjoy!
