Cherry Vanilla Smoothie

September 2, 2013 by Melissa

I realized something while on my smoothie-a-day bender: I have a terrible blender. I have one of those blenders that leaves ice cubes in the smoothie when it’s “done”.

My blender is very loud too. I’m not talking whirring and annoying, I’m talking extreme buzz saw, airplane taking off noise. I almost feel like I need to write an apology note for my neighbors. And leave them a smoothie. With ice cubes in it. Sorry.

Well, I have also learned that I can’t multitask while making a smoothie. My smoothie making time is quite drawn out because I have to keep stopping the blender to stir it. But sometimes I’d like to just let it run and figure things out for itself. Big mistake. Here’s what happened:

I decided to step away from the blender to stop the dryer really quickly. I didn’t want my gym shorts drawstrings to get all tangled (I’ll tell you about how terrible my dryer is on another day). I forgot that the bottom of my blender doesn’t exactly fit snugly into the base, it actually is quite wobbly and I have to hold it in there when the blender is on. Well, when I stepped away, it UNSCREWED itself from the blade!

I look over and the bottom of the container is separating from the blade…and then the smoothie comes gushing out the bottom!

Somehow, through a series of swift movements, I am able to save half of the smoothie. And then I had a serious mess to clean up. And only half of my breakfast.

You may have seen the picture I tweeted, praying that the Vitamix fairy pays me a visit. Still waiting.

Anyways, I hope you have better luck with your next smoothie! This one is an awesome one to try! It’s subtly sweet, and could take a dose of honey if you’re craving something sweeter. It’s very filling from all of the fruit and the protein from the Greek yogurt. A perfect start to your day.

Creamy dreamy cherry and vanilla with a hint of cinnamon. Pure and natural ingredients come together in a balanced breakfast smoothie.

Ingredients
  1. 1 ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt (I used Fage)
  2. 1 ¼ cup frozen cherries
  3. ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
  4. 2 Tbs. almond slices (I used honey roasted almond slices)
  5. ½ tsp. vanilla extract
  6. ¼ tsp. cinnamon
  7. ½ tsp. flaxseeds (optional)
  8. ½ cup ice
Instructions
  1. Place all of the ingredients except for the ice into your blender. Blend until smooth (you may need to stir it a few times to get the ingredients whirring). When it’s finished blending, if you want your smoothie thicker, add the ice and blend completely again.
  2. Pour into a giant cup and enjoy!

OMG. YES. I know exactly what you mean. I don’t even have a blender anymore because of the ice cube problem. I really just use my food processor for everything. I do, however, like that my immersion blender has a smoothie attachment, but it’s not really that powerful either. Perhaps THIS is why I don’t ever make smoothies?

Ok I have an immersion blender with that attachment too yet it doesn’t crush ice! What’s the point??

You know, cherries is one thing I’ve never tried in a smoothie before. Putting it on my last for the next time I make one 🙂

You definitely should! They’re so good. And they also are anti inflammatory and help muscle recovery so they’re a great way to start the morning!

I could eat bags of frozen (or fresh, but they’re rather pricy) cherries – they are SO ADDICTING! I still have yet to use the blender we got as a wedding gift last year to make a smoothie but I have used it to make margaritas… I need to change that 😉

Thanks girl! It’s actually a juice jar that I love using as a glass or to store homemade almond milk! I can’t resist a good jar 😉

Cherry and vanilla sounds like it would work extremely well! Now you got me curious and now I gotta bust out my own Vitamix and give it a try 😉

Good luck and let that Vitamix fairy find you ;D

Omg, THAT’S what happened to the smoothie?! Holy crap! Well, I don’t have a Vitamix (because I’m just too cheap to shell out that much for a blender….I mean seriously? It should come with someone to MAKE the smoothies for you for that price!!), but you can borrow my Cuisinart anytime you like…it’s usually pretty good about staying in one piece! 😉

Oh and just a little note…I totally missed cherry season too! Womp womp! 🙁
